Xiaomi wants to come to America, but it feels more stuck in China than ever
Stuck in China?
Haven't they become the first vendor in India and had the highest growth in Europe this year?
The Xiaomi A1 is the best selling phone in Amazon in Europe in many countries, right now.
The Xiaomi A2 may be an absolute midrange killer with the SD660 within few months.
So much for being stuck in China.

What evidence do you have that it's the best selling phone in Amazon in Europe? Amazon doesn't release sales figures on individual SKUs, so that seems like a suspicious claim.
World-wide Xiaomi is not even in the top 10.

This David Ruddock is too biased towards the Pixel in my opinion
looking at the Xiaomi Mi 8 in my hand, running the Chinese language ROM sans any Google services or really any Western app
Well, since it's a China launch, of course it will have China ROM! But a EU and global ROM will probably be available soon after.
Slapping Google’s mobile app package on it and removing all the China-specific software customization just gets you another Android phone - albeit one with hugely impressive specifications at a great price.
This is exactly the point that Xiaomi is doing to appeal to more buyers. It's been a great success in EU and SEA region
I think the real reason is as the top comment by "fakejobs" suggests:
The moment they step on US soil, they'll get sued to their bones by Apple.

You completely missed the point of the article. He's talking about Xiaomi's business model and whether or not that's workable in the states. His point is that Xiaomi doesn't have a clear plan to sustainability stateside because the way they make money in China (selling cheap phones to drive sales of other products and services) probably won't work in the US where we are already used to our cloud services and video streaming services among other things.
Remember, selling phones IS NOT how Xiaomi makes money. It's a means to an end.
That doesn't explain why they're currently expanding in Europe though, they've just opened a store in France.

Why wouldn't it?
