China isn't as nice as we think (self.malaysia)
China knowing that our country was corrupted, why did they still grant loans to our country? The agreements had horrible terms on them.
ah long is so nice lending money to people without asking them about their financial status
Having said that, as far as business deals go, each side has gotta protect their own interests. I don’t see how we can blame them when our leaders entered into these agreements themselves.
China might have lent us the shovels. But we dug the holes ourselves.
At least our leaders did.
Don't see any other superpowers making deals such as this. And it's not just us, China is doing it to Pakistan (who is so invested in China they can't say no), Sri Lanka, Burma and many other countries. So yeah, fuck China.
The colonial period is full of lopsided deals forced onto other countries/kingdoms by the major Western powers.
And in the modern era, USA love doing things to their benefit using threats of sanctions, and even “interventions” with war or puppets, in order to profit their own companies or push their national interests.
China do the things they did because they’re vulnerable geopolitically as they still can’t project power beyond regions near them. So they have to come out with a way to secure logistics routes for energy and raw materials through rail and port projects around the world, and at the same time it also support their construction companies and banks financing those projects.
Malaysia can always go to IMF, World Bank and other financial institutions for loans, investment and bailouts. But after what the western institutions like IMF and World Bank did during and after the Asian Currency crisis not many are willing to go back if they don't have to.
Malaysia wasn't a country back then. It was a family-run business
Did anyone thinks China is "nice", though? I'm not a fan of their whole "hurr it's South CHINA Sea, all is mine" policy.
